Do you remember? That you and your colleagues were forced to spend a whole day in such a cramped classroom to learn new things? While you were annoyed by a class pace that was too slow and therefore stared out a bit bored, as the clock ticked away by the minutes? Or maybe you just had a teacher who rushed through the course material at such a turbo speed that you lost your way a bit.

However, such a way of learning was very common not so long ago. Of course, the Covid pandemic had a big dark side, but to be honest: it does have a revolutionized our online work and learning. In many companies, working from home has become commonplace, and paper textbooks have been replaced by a hip knowledge platform, so you can learn at the pace that suits you from your favorite location. And you probably attend a webinar more often than you have to travel to a location on 'the heath'. We probably wouldn't have thought that possible a few years ago.

Do you think you've arranged it all well in your company? Watch out, don't sit back too much. The end of the developments is far from in sight, so it is important to stay up to date. It seems like new things are possible every day, so before you know it, your knowledge supply is outdated and your colleagues are no longer interested in it. So keep your eyes wide open for the trends and opportunities in the field of e-learning and move along. We have already listed a few of them for you here.

1. Artificial Intelligence

It shouldn't surprise you, given the huge clouds of dust that Artificial Intelligence raised in 2023: we put AI first when it comes to new e-learning trends. Of course, artificial intelligence can make our learning experience much more personal and fully tailored to an individual's learning needs and opportunities. And thanks to the self-learning ability, the course material and way of learning will become increasingly efficient. The lecturer's agenda can even be cleaned of things like administrative chores and assigning grades.

You may already feel it coming: there can also be a downside to taking Artificial Intelligence too far. After all, humans are usually less logical than an automated brain. Being able to follow feelings, expectations, dreams and hormonal errors? Just stand there as a robot.

So feel free to use all that information from big data, cookies and other smarts, but as a manager, also keep a warm finger on the pulse of your employees. Also, ensure sufficient human interaction opportunities between participants. And last but not least: guard the boundaries of privacy and etiquette carefully. Your employees want to gain new knowledge in a relaxed and safe way, without a big brother is watching you-feeling.

2. Totally immersive: AV and VR

Immersive learning is being used more and more, and that's not surprising. By using Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), you as a student get an immersive experience. You are really immersed in a certain situation, it almost feels like a real one training on the job. With the bonus that you can try out solutions and reactions to your heart's content, without harm.

Immersive learning provides an intense experience that you really need to process. It is therefore best to combine it with other, somewhat quieter forms of knowledge transfer. This offers the student the opportunity to switch off for a while, process what they have learned and recharge.

3. Images, not words

The importance of plain text is declining more and more. Research shows that more and more people prefer visual knowledge sharing.

This can be in many forms. An infographic, video or an easy-to-read graph not only comes to many people faster and clearer, the information also lingers longer. In addition, it is easier to inform employees who did not learn Dutch as their mother tongue.

So it is certainly worthwhile to fill your knowledge platform with teaching materials in a visually appealing way. In doing so, make sure you have a good mix. Late filmed interviews, how-tos and demos alternate. This is the best way to keep the student's attention. Play around with the difficulty level so everyone gets a tone of voice hits a level that best suits him or her personally.

4. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)

A Massive Open Online Course is a course intended for mass participation. Anyone interested in the topic can register on their own initiative and free of charge. Participation is online, so it doesn't matter where you are in the world. This is of course ideal for participants. You increase your knowledge and expand your network without costing you a cent.

Why would you want that as an organization: invest time and money to distribute knowledge as if it were litter? For example, you can think of it as an appetizer. You introduce people to a part of your product or service and your organization, in the hope that it tastes like more. A MOOC can therefore provide you with new customers or applicants. That's the business side.

Another consideration may be more idealistic. You would like to introduce your vision to the world, or make a discovery available to society because you find it important.

5. Gamification

Playful learning was already on the rise, but is here to stay. More and more companies have now applied gamification in their learning offerings, and that is not surprising.

After all, by using game techniques and challenging game elements, you can achieve a serious goal: transferring knowledge in such a way that the material sticks almost unnoticed.

Moreover, such a way of learning is not only very effective. It also makes for a pleasant feeling. Because, of course, a game is more fun than a boring, dusty textbook without any interaction!

Fun makes someone intrinsically motivated to quickly gain even more knowledge. People simply like to score points and be rewarded with badges for their academic results.
