The time has come - 2023 is just around the corner! This means that, even when it comes to e-learning, there is again a lot of attention for reflection and looking ahead. In this blog, we share the most important e-learning trends for 2023 with you, so you can prepare in advance!
However, e-learning is inextricably linked to technology. Technological developments facilitate the growth of e-learning. That's why we think it's important to also include the most promising technological trends and developments for 2023 to share with you that (will) make e-learning a lot more interesting and user-friendly.
After the Corona pandemic, hybrid working increasingly common in many organisations. Where working from home used to be the exception, it is now much more accepted and often even encouraged.
This development also causes a shift in Learning & Development within organisations and companies. When you change where and when employees work, it also means being open to changing where and when employees learn. In addition, as an organisation, you naturally want to make sure that every employee feels involved, seen and heard. The ideal way to facilitate this is blended learning. This can be used, for example, by a combination of e-learning where the employee learns at their own pace (online course, subject, training) with live (online) meetings.
Because the Netherlands is still facing a tight labor market, it is all the more important to retain good employees by continuously stimulating them. Because organisations hope that their employees will want to stay in their current position or apply for internal positions, the focus is on offering L&D in the field of skills that can be widely used. This is how the employee develops in the broadest sense, in the hope that the employee will use these skills within the current organisation where he/she works. This is also attractive for employees because these skills can also be used in any future positions in the same, or another, company.

It is important that employees can learn what they want/need to learn when they want to learn it. It is then not convenient for them to be in a hugely full of LMS (Learning Management System) to dive and first have to search for another 10 minutes for the training or module they are looking for and that is relevant to them. More and more online learning platforms offer the possibility to adapt the learning offerings to those who log in. This saves a lot of time, keeps track of progress, and meets the needs of both employee and employer.
In addition, it is of course very important to continuously monitor: what do employees need? What do they want to learn?
In terms of technology in e-learning, 2023 will also be an interesting year! We are putting on a number of new and innovative IT trends for 2023 for you at a glance that we think you should keep an eye on.
With long boring videos and endless pieces of text, you really can't put on weight these days.
You already read it in our blogs about microlearning: our attention span is getting shorter by the day. Microlearning and also nano-learning consist of small, manageable pieces of information that are aimed at achieving a certain learning goal. Often, these pieces of information are cast in an attractive media format such as a podcast, gifs, videos, quizzes, etc. As a result, the information is easily and quickly accessible from various devices such as a laptop, tablet and phone and can be learned in the blink of an eye and in just a few minutes.
Where microlearning is part of a larger (online) program or offer, nano-learning a self-study program designed to allow a participant to learn a specific topic digitally and all by themselves (i.e. without support from, for example, a trainer or teacher) in a period of ten minutes.
Under the technological trends is Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one you probably haven't missed. The possibilities of AI are endless and are enthusiastically received by students: AI really brings e-learning to life! It makes learning more personal, offers opportunities such as asking questions 24/7 and much more.
Gamification is using game elements to make learning activities more challenging and fun. In addition, traditional game elements such as scoring points, competing with others and following the rules are used to increase engagement in learning.
Gamification However, is not simply “playing a game”, but rather the effective use of certain game elements to enrich the learning experience and make it more interesting. It ensures that students stay involved. This leads to an increase in intrinsic motivation. Especially in this day and age, employees often need to connect: what's more fun than beating your college in a “competition” or competing against each other in a quiz? That only makes for fun conversations at the coffee machine!
