You want to get started with an LMS. For yourself or for your organisation. But what should you pay attention to when choosing an LMS? We wrote a blog about it!

Choosing an LMS

Quality e-learning depends on the right Learning Management System (LMS). In our blog about the effectively choosing a Learning Management System we discussed that it is important to:

  1. choosing the LMS with a clear purpose
  2. Involve everyone who is going to work with the LMS in the choice of an LMS
  3. Define the essential functionalities of the LMS
  4. trying out the LMS
  5. Ensuring service and support in the LMS

Once you have completed these steps, the next step is to choose an actual system. In this blog, we'll take a closer look at what to look for when purchasing a Learning Management System.

After all, there are an awful lot of Learning Management Systems on the market and not every system suits every organisation.

In addition, a higher price does not necessarily mean higher quality or the best match with your organisation. Of course, you want to get the most out of your employees' learning experience - for them and for the organisation.

In this blog, we explain what to look for when choosing a specific Learning Management System for your training and your organisation.

LMS is user-friendly and reliable

Of course, you want to prevent your employee from being busy with online training and then losing their work because the LMS crashes. This causes resistance and frustration. In addition, it costs money, because the employee spends time solving the problem.

It is therefore important to choose an LMS that is technically well put together and has a high availability. The system must be up and running at least 98% of the time.

In addition, it learns best when the LMS is intuitive. furnished is. This means that all information is easy to find and it is clear at a glance what the next step is for the student.

For example, if you have completed a part, it is nice if the LMS automatically guides you to the next part.

Or if you are looking for information, it is nice that it is always clear where to find it. This allows you to make optimal use of the employee's time and energy.

LMS matches your content

Has your organisation already collected a lot of information that you want to include in the LMS? Then, of course, you want to easily organise this content in the LMS. If you have already created many videos or other materials, check that the LMS is suitable for including the teaching materials. You should also be able to easily integrate external, purchased e-learning into the system. After all, you want to have 1 place where all learning within your organisation is centralised.

Haven't you created content for the e-learning yet?

Remember that your employees have different preferences and a variety of content and content presentation (video, podcast, articles, etc.) is desirable. Alternate this with physical meetings, external e-learnings, blended learning paths, videos, knowledge base articles and webinars. Then, choose an LMS that integrates these elements effectively.

It is also important that the LMS meets the (international) standards of e-learning (such as LTI), that the existing materials are clearly organised and that the materials can be used for multiple training courses.

LMS is personal and accessible

How more personal and the better the LMS fits your organisation, the higher the chance that employees will actually come back and keep learning.

More personal in terms of content, but also in terms of accessibility. By this, we mean that it is essential that the employee can learn at any time and at any desired location. On the couch with a tablet, on the bus with a phone, or in the office on a desktop computer: the LMS provides access to the student's learning environment at any time and via any device.

Microlearning is extremely suitable for this. Because microlearning uses short video clips and manageable teaching materials, they are easier to upload and access via the LMS from any device. Therefore, check whether the LMS offers options for this.

The LMS you choose should also provide space for personalising content.

For each employee, regardless of their learning style, preferences, interests and (technical) background, and for uploading videos, podcasts, articles, websites, gifs, etc.

LMS tests and analyses

When you invest in an LMS, you naturally want to know how the learning activities contribute to employees' knowledge and skills.

That is why it is important that the LMS offers opportunities to analyze the employee's behavior and results.

This includes, for example, analyzing the amount of time an employee spends on training and the results achieved in a quiz or other form of assessment. Detailed reports provide insight into the employee's progress and how this relates to the goals you had in mind when you started the learning intervention.

You can also add assignments and assessments that are assessed by an external person. Think of reflection assignments, a video in which someone introduces themselves, but also competencies that, for example, can be ticked off by a manager.

Imagine that you have developed a leadership learning path. This can include e-learnings, test moments, reference work and physical meetings. In addition, you want someone to give a presentation to the department, for example. This can then be assessed in the LMS.

That is why it is advisable to choose an LMS that allows various assessment options, such as building a portfolio, collaborating on group projects and providing feedback to fellow students.

Choose LMS: can you also organise meetings?

In addition to all the online learning resources you want to collect in the LMS, most organisations also organise meetings. This can include knowledge sessions, on-site training, webinars or training courses where you hire an external trainer. You also ideally want to arrange the entire organisation and registration of this in the LMS.

Therefore, check whether the most important functionalities for organising meetings are included in the LMS:

  • Employees can register themselves or managers can register employees;
  • Waiting list for when the course is full;
  • Access to teaching materials before the event;
  • Attendance registration;
  • Communication with course participants;
  • Able to filter by topic or see when the next course dates are;
  • Handy reports, so you can provide access and distribute certificates in bulk.

Choosing an LMS: What to look out for

So when you choose an LMS, pay attention to:

  • Usability
  • Reliability
  • Content options
  • Personality
  • Accessibility
  • Testing and analysis opportunities
  • Possibility to organise meetings

If you keep an eye on these important elements, chances are that you will choose an LMS that exactly suits your organisation and your needs.
